  • Description

POLITICAL PARTIES IN FRANCE ARE MAKING THEIR FINAL PREPARATIONS FOR THE NATIONAL ELECTIONS FOR WHICH POLLING BEINGS ON SUNDAY (MARCH 5).

PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S DECISION TO MAKE A FINAL RADIO AND TELEVISION ADDRESS ON SATURDAY - JUST 12 HOURS BEFORE POLLING BEGINS - HAS WRONG BITTER PROTESTS FROM ALL THE OPPOSITION PARTIES. BUT SEVERAL POLITICAL LEADERS ARE REPORTED TO DRAW SOME CONSOLATION FROM WHAT THEY INTERPRET AS THE PRESIDENT'S INCREASING ANXIETY ABOUT THE ELECTION RESULT.

A PUBLIC OPINION POLL AT THE WEEKEND (FEBRUARY 26) SHOWED SUPPORT FOR GAULLIST CANDIDATES SHRINKING AND THE COMMUNISTS GAINING GROUND. THE POLL, TAKEN ON FEBRUARY 23, SHOWED A STEADY DECLINE IN GAULLIST SUPPORT OVER THE PREVIOUS MONTH, BUT STILL FORECAST A GOVERNMENT VICTORY.

ACCORDING TO THE OPINION POLLS, IN THE GAULLISTS WERE TO LOSE ANOTHER TWO PER CENT OF THEIR SUPPORTERS THEY WOULD LOST THEIR MAJORITY IN THE NEW ASSEMBLY. THIS COULD FORCE THEM TO COME TO SOME AGREEMENT WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF SENATOR JEAN LECANUET'S DEMOCRATIC CENTRE.

IN THE FIRST BALLOT ON SUNDAY ONLY CANDIDATES WITH MORE VOTES THAN ALL OTHERS COMBINED ARE ELECTED. UNDER AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE COMMUNISTS AND THE SOCIALISTS, THE LEFT-WING MAN WITH THE SMALLER VOTE WITHDRAWS IN THE RUN-OFF ELECTION THE FOLLOWING SUNDAY.

IF ENOUGH COMMUNIST CANDIDATES TOP THE KEY POLL IN THE FIRST ROUND, THEY WOULD BE IN A POSITION TO DECIDE THE OUTCOME IN THE SECOND BALLOT. THE SOCIALISTS WANT TO BEAT THE GAULLISTS AT ALL COSTS, EVEN IF IT MEANS LETTING IN A RIGHT-WING MAN. THE COMMUNISTS HAVE SAID THEY REFUSE TO THROW THEIR VOTES TO "REACTIONARIES". IN PRACTISE, THIS MEANS THAT IN A CERTAIN NUMBER OF CASES THE COMMUNIST PARTY CAN HELP A GAULLIST TO GET IN.
