  • Description

Professor of Archaeology at Israel's Hebrew University, Yigael Yadin, former C-in-C of Israel's army, announced important archaeological discoveries to a gathering including President Ben Zwi, Premier Ben Gurion, Foreign Minister Golda Meier, and Dead Sea Scrolls expert Professor Bieberkraut, Jerusalem, May 15.

The discoveries - made six weeks ago in the Judean desert by a highly organized Israeli expedition - are eleven letters from SimonBar-Kochba - "son of a Star" - the leader of the last Jewish revolt against the Romans, 135 A.D. They refer to a period before the Jews were forced back to guerrilla warfare, mentioning crops and houses. But they reveal Bar-Kochba's character clearly; their style is imperious and curt, and punishments are threatened if orders are not promptly carried out. By a remarkable co-incidence the discovery was announced - on the eve of Lag Ba'omer, the festival commemorating his epic struggle.

Written on papyrus and wooden slats, they were discovered in a cave to the west of the Dead Sea, wrapped in goatskin. Wool and beads were discovered nearby.

In 1952 two of Bar-Kochba's letters were found by Bedouin in Jordan territory, and other objects - believed to have been used by his men - were found by Israeli searchers early this year.
