  • Description

Amid continuing preparations for a possible communist offensive in South Vietnam's Central Highlands, servicemen from the Due To Base near the Khmer border have been joining in Tet(New Year) celebrations with Montagnard tribesmen in a nearby village. The tribesmen, although Vietnamese citizens, are not of the Vietnamese race but still enjoy the chance to join in dancing and other festivities at New Year. For many years the Montagnard have borne the brunt of regular highland offensives. The American Special Forces advisers, with whom they have mainly worked, consider them among the best troops in Vietnam.

SYNOPSIS: Duc To Base Camp in the Central High-lands of South Vietnam near the Khmer border.

Here, as elsewhere in South Vietnam, servicemen have been busy preparing for anticipated Tet communist offensives.

A constant lookout for communist units has been maintained from observation towers such as this, while troops have worked to strengthen base facilities and effect repairs to equipment and vehicles (PAUSE 5 SECS) Army mechanics have taken advantage of a recent lull in fighting to ensure that the tanks stationed at the Base perform to specifications.

This tank was damaged during an attack on the Base. Due To is a strategically important Base Camp in the western Pleiku Province....considered one of the most likely areas to come under communist attack during the Vietnamese New Year season.

At a nearby village inhabited by Montagnard tribesmen and their families, servicemen from Duc To were joining in Tet festivities at the weekend. Although Vietnamese citizens, the tribesmen are not Vietnamese by race, and seldom adhere to Vietnamese teachings or customs. However Tet provides as opportunity to enjoy a little rice wine and dancing.

American Special Forces advisers who have worked with the Montagnard tribesmen regard them highly as fighters.
