  • Description

A big crowd staged a demonstration outside Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai's residence on Thursday (28 July) to protest against rising food prices.

SYNOPSIS: About 1,500 people, including several opposition members of Parliament, took part in the protest in New Delhi. Inflation in India was running at 15 per cent last financial year, but prices of many basic food commodities have risen even faster.

Among the leaders of the protest was Mr. Chandrajit Yadav, former Minister for Steel and Mines in the government of Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The protest reinforced anxiety within the ruling Janata Party itself. Party President Chandra Sekhar said the government may have to act if prices of basic commodities did not fall soon. The demonstrators said some government actions had aggravated the price crisis.

The organisers in a petition to Mr. Desai asked the government to take urgent effective steps to bring down prices and to make arrangements for their supply at reasonable rates.
