  • Description

POPE PAUL LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY) CRITICISED POWERFUL NATIONS FOR ESTABLISHING THEIR ECONOMIC STABILITY BY TRADING ARMS TO POOR NATIONS LACKING "PLOUGHS, SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS." THE POPE WAS SPEAKING AT THE CHURCH OF JESUS IN ROME DURING WORLD PEACE DAY.

POPE PAUL REFERRED TO THREE WARNS DURING HIS PEACE PRAYER. HE SAID VIETNAM, NIGERIA AND THE MIDDLE EAST, HAD BROUGHT ABOUT THE REAPPEARANCE OF THE IDEOLOGIES WHICH MADE MEN ENEMIES OF ONE ANOTHER. THESE WERE CLASS HATRED, NATIONALISTIC PRIDE, TRIBAL RIVALRIES AND COMMERCIAL SELFISHNESS.

THE PRAYER ENDED A SPEECH IN WHICH THE POPE SAID PEACE WAS THE DUTY OF EVERYONE IN SOCIETY AND NOT JUST OF LEADERS. HE SAID THAT SOME PEOPLE MIGHT THINK THAT IT WASN'T THEIR CONCERN, BUT TODAY DEMOCRATICALLY ORGANISED SOCIETY ASSIGNED DUTIES TO ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY.

IT WAS THE THIRD TIME THE POPE HAD DELIVERED A PEACE PRAYER. THE FIRST DAY OF PEACE WAS HELD ON JANUARY I 1968
