  • Description

Troops and armed police from five states have been drafted into the southern state of Andrah, in India, to help contain bloody agitation for the creation of a separate state for Telenga, Leaders of the movement have pledged that they will fight to the death to get what they want.

The Indian Government has rejected the demands for a separate state for Telenga and has given Andrah State's chief minister a mandate to put the agitation.

Since the agitation started in January of this year, about 1-hundred people have died, and schools and colleges have been closed for seven months. Daily demonstrations in the Andrah capital of Hyderabad and closures of shops, businesses and factories in reply to separatist calls for a shut-down have cost the state's economy hundreds of pounds sterling.

In the countryside, railway have been the target of continued attacks, with agitators pulling up railway fires and blocking the tracks.

Since the birth of the state in 1956, when the eastern coastal region of Andrah was merged with Telenga, resentment has built up against the alleged political and economic domination of the state by the Andrahs.

Now, throughout the state, "Joi (Long Live) Telengah" slogans can be seen plastered on walls.
