  • Description

Mohammed Reza Pahlevi, the Shah of Iran, celebrated his 53rd birthday on Thursday (26 Oct) with a pageant in Iran's new Aryamehr Stadium in Teheran. The monarch has been the unifying symbol of a strongly nationalistic people since he came to power in nineteen-forty-one.

Born on October the 26th 1919, he came to power when his father, Reza Shah the Great, abdicated after being removed from power by the Western Allies for favouring Nazi Germany. Since 1941 the Shah has steered one of the oldest monarchies in the world towards a 20th-century democracy. To do so, he had to survive several attempts at assassination. In one he received two minor bullet wounds. In another he escaped a machinegun attack.

Twice the Shah gave up a wife in order to find a queen who could provide an heir to the throne established 2,500 years ago. There was national rejoicing when the Shah's third wife, Empress Farah, whom he married in 1959, bore him a son, Prince Ali Reza a year later.
