The Prime Minister of India, Mr. Morarji Desai, will arrive in London on Tuesday (6 June) for talks on disarmament, bilateral trade and international economic issues with the British Prime Minister, Mr. James Callaghan. Mr. Desai in on a 10-day tour of Belgium, Britain and the United States where he is due to address a special United Nations session on disarmament next week. On Monday (5 June) he visited European Economic Community (EEC) leaders in Brussels.
SYNOPSIS: At the EEC Commission headquarters in Brussels Mr. Desai was met by the President of the Commission Mr. Roy Jenkins. Mr. Desai later described the meeting as "very fruitful". He said the purpose of his two-day visit to Belgium was to increase mutual trust and goodwill rather than walk about specific issues.
The 82-year-old Prime Minister said talks would get underway soon on renewing the EEC-India commercial cooperation agreement, due to expire in April next year. He said India would be looking for improved access to the EEC market in some areas, like textiles. India is the third largest beneficiary of the Communist's generalised system of preferences and Mr. Desai said the two sides would be discussing what improvements could be made. India had a 270-million Dollar trade surplus with the EEC last year.
