  • Description

Journalists and passers-by stood outside 17, Rue de Tournon, Paris, Nov. 26, watching theatre and cinema stars coming and going.

Gerard Philipe, 37, one of France's most popular motion-picture and stage actors, died suddenly of a heart attack here, at his home Nov. 25. He had been ill for several days, but his condition was not regarded as serious.

An actor who acquired international fame for some of his film roles he was considered one of the cinema world's most versatile stars. His roles ranged from the tortured young man in 'Le Diable au Corps his first international success in 1947 - to the buffoonery of "Fanfan la Tulipe".

His name is now prominently featured in Roger Vadim's production of "les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960", a controversial adaptation of an 18th-century novel by Choderlos de Laclos, in which M. Philipe plays the principal role of Valmont, a ruthless rake. The film, deemed too daring, has been barred for export by the French Government
