  • Description

A FURTHER STAGE WAS REACHED LAST TUESDAY (21 JANUARY) IN THE REPATRIATION OF GHANAIAN FISHERMEN AND THEIR DEPENDENTS FROM SIERRA LEONE.

54 WOMEN AND 90 CHILDREN -- DEPENDENTS OF EXPELLED GHANAIAN FISHERMEN -- ARRIVED IN ACCRA BY AIR FROM FREETOWN.

THEY WERE THE FIRST GROUP TO ARRIVE BY AIRCRAFT SPECIALLY CHARTERED FROM BRITANNIA AIRWAYS TO BRING THESE FAMILIES BACK TO GHANA.

ON ARRIVAL THEY WERE IMMEDIATELY INNOCULATED AGAINST INFECTIOUS DISEASES.

THE ARRIVALS WERE MOSTLY FANTIS AND EWES. MRS. AKUYO ETU, ONE OF THE EWES, TOLD REPORTERS THAT THEY HAD GONE TO SIERRA LEONE BECAUSE THEY ENJOYED TRAVELLING, BUT HAD CAUGHT LESS FISH THERE THAN THEY DID IN GHANA, AND WERE HAPPY TO BE BACK HOME.

AN OFFICIAL OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WELFARE, WHO WELCOMED THE FAMILIES AT THE AIRPORT, SAID THEY WOULD BE PUT OF AT THE TRADE FAIR SITE, AND WOULD THEN RETURN TO THEIR VILLAGES.

(IN ALL, OVER 2,000 FISHERMEN ARE AFFECTED BY THE EXPULSION ORDER, WHICH THE SIERRA LEONE GOVERNMENT HAS JUSTIFIED ON ECONOMIC AND SECURITY GROUNDS. MORE THAN 100 EXPELLED GHANAIAN FISHERMEN ARRIVED WITH THEIR FAMILIES IN TEMA BY SHIP EARLIER THIS MONTH.)
