  • Description

At a vast rally of the Opposition 'National Front' party in the Jalaliyeh polo grounds in Teheran May 18, the name of Dr Mossadeq, the deposed Prime Minister who nationalized Persia's oil industry, was thunderously acclaimed for the first time for eight years.

A gathering of over 80,000 - the largest gathering of party supporters since General Zahedi's coup d'etat in 1953 - listened to addresses by three of Dr Mossadeq's former Ministers. The demonstration was said to be an act of defiance against the new "anti-corruption" Prime Minister, Dr Ali Amini.

During two hours of speeches, the Nationalist Front leaders demanded new elections within a month of the dissolution of the old "Majlis" on May 9. The new Government was denounced for trying to "delude the people".

Dr. Kaim Sanjabi, a former member of Parliament, called for Persian decisions "made in Teheran and not in Washington, London or Moscow". Other speakers were Dr Sadighi, ex-Minister of the Interior, and Dr. Alayar Saleh who protested against Dr. Mossadeq being kept "under house arrest against the law".

Dr. Mossadeq lives quietly on his estates 30 miles west of the capital. A strong police guard rings his house and he is allowed no visitors.
