  • Description

"The World of Franklin and Jefferson", a major American exhibition commemorating the bicentenary of the American Revolution, opened in Warsaw on Saturday (17 May).

The exhibition, in the National Museum, will later move to Paris and then London.

Poland was chosen as one of the three European countries which will host the exhibition because of the contributions made by Poland and its people to the growth of the American Republic.

The work of the Polish heroes Kazimierz Pulaski and Tadeus Kosciuszko to the Revolution are widely recognised and valued in America.

Pulaski organised and partly financed the Polish Legion, consisting of several hundred Poles, which became the first American cavalry unit.

Pulaski was fatally wounded leading a charge at the Battle of Savannah, in 1779, the first foreigner of his rank and distinction to die for the American cause.

Kosciuszko, remembered as the "Father of the American Artillery", was also a skilled military engineer, whose fortifications at Saratoga and West Point had considerable influence on American success on the battlefield.

The exhibition opened in Poland as relations between America and Poland are steadily expanding.

"The World of Franklin and Jefferson" moves to London in September.
