  • Description

IN TOKYO, THERE HAVE BEEN CLASHES THIS WEEK BETWEEN RIOT POLICE AND STUDENTS DEMONSTRATING AGAINST UNITED STATES ACTION IN VIETNAM. THE DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE BEEN HELD IN THE BUSY CENTRE OF TOKYO, DISRUPTING TRAFFIC AND RESULTING IN A NUMBER OF FIGHTS BETWEEN DEMONSTRATORS AND POLICE.

YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) MORE THAN 1,000 STUDENTS CARRYING ELABORATED BANNERS, MARCHED THROUGH THE GINZA DISTRICT OF TOKYO. THEY SHOUTED SLOGANS AGAINST AMERICAN ACTION AGAINST THE VIET CONG. POLICE MOVED IN TO BREAK UP THE DEMONSTRATION, AND WERE GREETED BY A SHOWER OF STONES.

IN ANOTHER AREA OF TOKYO, OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY, 6,000 TRADE UNIONISTS HELD ANOTHER DEMONSTRATION AGAINST UNITED STATES ACTIVITY IN SOUTH VIETNAM.

EARLIER, FOUR THOUSAND STUDENTS HAD ATTENDED A MEETING IN TOKYO'S HIBIYA PARK, AND ANOTHER THREE THOUSAND MET IN SHIBA PARK.

IT HAS BEEN ALLEGED THAT POLICE USED DELIBERATE VIOLENCE TO BREAK UP THE DEMONSTRATION AS THE STUDENTS POURED OUT OF THE PARKS THROUGH TOKYO STREETS. PRESS PHOTOGRAPHERS CLAIMED THAT POLICE HAD COVERED THE LENSES OF THEIR CAMERAS WHILE OTHER POLICE KICKED STUDENTS WHO WERE LYING ON THE GROUND.

A NUMBER OF ARRESTS WERE MADE. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED BY TWO TUTORS AT TOKYO UNIVERSITY, AND MANY STUDENTS IGNORED LECTURES TO TAKE PART.
