THE EMPEROR OF ETHIOPIA, HAILE SELASSIE, WHO'S ON AN EIGHT-NATION TOUR OF THE WORLD, HAS BEEN VISITING MELBOURNE IN AUSTRALIA.

HE ARRIVED FROM INDONESIA FOR A FOUR-DAY VISIT. AFTER AUSTRALIA HIS TOUR INCLUDES VISITS TO SOUTH KOREA, MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE.

THE EMPEROR'S VISIT TO MELBOURNE WAS AS INFORMAL AS THE AUSTRALIANS COULD MAKE IT. IT BEGAN IN THE MORNING WHEN HE VISITED THE BOTANIC GARDENS TO PLANT A CEDAR TREE. THE SURPRISED HIS HOSTS BY TELLING THEM HE'D ALREADY SEEN THE GARDENS - AT 7:30 THAT MORNING WHEN, FEELING LIKE SOME EXERCISE, HE TOOK A QUICK STROLL WITH AN AIDE.

FROM FLORA TO FAUNA - AND A VISIT TO MELBOURNE'S ZOO FOR A LOOK AT SOME OF AUSTRALIA'S NATIVE ANIMALS - MOST A GENTLE AND SOMNOLENT CONTRAST TOT HE PET LIONS THAT PROWL THE EMPEROR'S PALACE GARDENS IN ADDIS ABABA. WITH THE EMPEROR WERE TWO OF HIS GRAND-DAUGHTERS, PRINCESS IJAIGAYEHOU AND PRINCESS SOPHIA. THE EMPEROR WAS GIVEN A CHANCE TO FEED SOME OF THE ANIMALS - A PRIVILEGE ALLOWED SPECIAL VISITORS ONLY.

FOUR YOUNG AUSTRALIAN VISITORS TO THE ZOO MET THE EMPEROR AND HE SIGNED THEIR AUTOGRAPH BOOKS.

BECAUSE OF HIS WELL-KNOWN INTEREST IN THOROUGHBRED HORSES, THE AUSTRALIANS ARRANGED FOR THE EMPEROR TO VISIT FLEMINGTON RACE COURSE - THE VENUE FOR THE MELBOURNE CUP, AUSTRALIA'S RICHEST HORSE-RACE. HE ALSO SAW SOME PRIZE HORSES AT CHICQUITA LODGE AND A SWIMMING POOL FOR HORSES WHICH THE AUSTRALIANS USE TO STRENGTHEN THE ANIMALS MUSCLES.

FROM MELBOURNE THE EMPEROR FLEW TO PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA.
