  • Description

A collision between a passenger train and a bus at a level crossing at Allach, a northern suburb of Munich, West Germany, on Friday (7 March), killed twelve people and injured five others.

The accident occurred when the passenger train, which was travelling at 120 kpm (75 mph), ploughed into the bus which was on the crossing, and dragged it 300 yards (metres) along the railway line. Those who died included five young girls aged between 10 and 16, and a ten year-old boy. The children were all on their way to school.

Wreckage and bits of bodies were strewn over a wide area of the line. The train's engine and eight coaches were derailed. The train had been travelling from Munich to Ingolstadt, about 45 miles (70 kms) away.

The Police blamed a 33 year-old level crossing attendant, who, they alleged, had closed the crossing gates at Allach, to let a local train through, but had then opened them again although the scheduled passenger train from Munich was due. The attendant was not named.
