  • Description

Nineteen seamen are known to have died following a collision between a liquefied-gas tanker and freighter in Tokyo Bay on Saturday (9 November) night.

In the wake of the collision the 10,074-ton Liberian freighter Pacific Ares caught fire and the 43,723-ton Japanese tanker, Number 10 Yuyo Maru, exploded and burned furiously at the bows -- spilling blazing liquefied gas onto the sea.

Eighteen of the dead seamen came from the freighter and one from the tanker. Another 14 remain unaccounted for -- ten from the Pacific Ares' crew of 29 and four from the Japanese ship's crew of 38.

Maritime safety authorities at nearby Yokohama arrested the captain of the Japanese vessel on Sunday (10 November) in connection with the collision. A spokesman for the authorities said the captain -- identified as Akira Ogawa -- was being held on suspicion of failing to take proper steps to avoid the accident.
