Background: In a country where economic development is a major preoccupation, the fiftieth anniversary of a manufacturer is a state occasion. The President of Ivory Coast, President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, was the guest of honour at the Blohorn company's fiftieth anniversary celebrations.

SYNOPSIS: The Ivory Coast has in recent years experienced dramatic economic growth, due at least in part to the encouragement given to enterprises such as this one. The Blohorn factory was founded in 1929 and is now in a strong trading position. President Houphouet-Boigny was among those who celebrated when the company reached its fiftieth year of trading.

The occasion was marked with an exhibition showing the company's history and its major products. A photographic display records the rise of the company as a producer of such products as beauty soap.

The products are derived from palm oil and coconuts. From these tropical primary resources are derived vegetable oil, margarine, and soaps, and the company produces many other household requirements including soap powder, detergents and hairspray. Some of the manufacturing processes and uses of the products were demonstrated for the official party.

The company now employs two thousand workers in its factories and plantations, and although there are forty-nine Europeans at executive level, the General manager is M. Aka Anghui, a native of Ivory Coast. The company has become a big exporter, sending its products throughout West and North Africa, and Europe.
