  • Description

After an unlicensed Black Panther demo in town on May 1st, when they, supported by the New Left and left-wing elements, tried to disrupt traffic through one of the main arteries of Jerusalem and some 30 of the demonstrators were arrested by police, the left wing students of the Hebrew University yesterday demanded of the rector, Prof. Katz, that he protest on their behalf the brutality of the Jerusalem police in breaking up the demo. When Prof. Katz refused, becaused amongst the "students' delegation" were non-student elements such as Black Panthers and political functionaries of the Communists, the students decided to hold a 24hrs vigil in the Senate room of the H.U. admin building. They discussed all sorts of ideological questions and decided, communicating with their supporters down on the groundlevel by loudspeakers and megaphones, to hold a sit-in demo at lunch time and to then leave in demonstration past the PM's office to the Knesset and demand a delegation be received there to accept their protest against the police brutality and to support their right to demonstrate. When those students, who had held out in the Seante room all night and during the morning finally came down, they were greeted by the applause of their supporters, by the "boohs" of their opponents and by the smiles of those students for whom this was much of a comedy. More than 50% of those who had sat-in were students from North and South America as well as from France, all here under the foreign students scheme of the Hebrew University. But the left-labour Israelis who were a minority amongst them succeeded in preventing the others from becoming violent. They also so to it that all decisions were voted on and that the majority would decide. But all of them, in their speeches attacked the elected students' union, the faculty and especially the Rector of the university and vowed to continue the demonstration until "success" is achieved. But the majority decided that apart from provocations shouted at the police guarding the PM's office and the demand that a delegation be received by the knesset, the demonstration passed peacefully. Riotpolicemen remained passive and so did the watercanon and the police on horseback. But the hardcore elements amongst the left-wingers decided to continue the protest on the Hebrew University campus tomorrow. It is not over yet.
