  • Description

In accordance with his last wishes, President Pompidou was buried at a simple and strictly private ceremony in the cemetery at the village of Orvilliers, south west of Paris. there was none of the pomp and ceremony usually associated with the burial of a Head of State.

The grave is only five hundred yards away from the house which the late President and hie wife bought 24 years ago from the village baker. The couple were friends of most of the 268 people who live in Orvilliers, and they used the house as a country home.

Only members of the family and a few close friends were present at the simple graveside ceremony. Barlier there had been a Mass held in the President's Danish church at Saint-houis-en-L'ile in Paris. Some members of the Government were among the Congregation.

President Pomoidou had also expressed a wish that his coffin should only be adorned by a tricolour and there should be no flowers. The first wish was respected, but as the public filed into the cemetery after the buriel service, wreaths and sprays of flowers appeared on the grave.
