  • Description

The West African Economic Community -- ECOWAS -- has been holding a five-day meeting to discuss customs unions, trade flow and telecommunications The conference of the 16-nation Community opened in Lagos, the Nigerian capital, on Monday (18 July).

SYNOPSIS: The Community was founded by the Treaty of Lagos in 1975, and the first ministerial meeting was held in Accra, Ghana, last year.

The Ministers heard the Chief of Staff of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore John Yisa Doko, deliver a message from Nigerian Head of State, Lieutenant General Olusegun Obasanjo, warning them of internal and external hostility to the Community. The external hostility, he said, came from the world's major powers, who were more interested in preserving their numerous economic and socio-political advantages over the third world nations. Internal opposition, he said, might come from people who did not wish to see their individual national identities subordinated to a wider Community image.

The ministers also heard Air Commodore Doko express the Nigerian Head of State's rejection of any charity from the industrialised nations, who had founded their wealth on the basis of the natural resources of third world nations like those of the Community. The Community would achieve its own objectives, he said, even though it might not be easy in the face of hostilities.
