  • Description

Two of the crewmen from the Pueblo held a news conference Monday (30 December) in San Diego, California, and talked about the brutalities that had been inflicted upon them during their imprisonment by the North Koreans.

One of the sailors, 27 year old Charles Law, Jr. told of having been beaten by North Korean interrogators with a 2 inch by 2 inch piece of wood until it broke. The, he said, as he knelt, they used a 4 inch by 4 inch piece of wood and "this was followed by fists to the head, groin, thighs and legs." In all, he said, he received some 250 to 300 blows.

A fellow crewman, 26 year old Lee Hayes, said the North Koreans "kept us mentally off balance and in a state of terror the whole period." (The Pueblo crew spent 11 months in a North Korean prison.)
Both men said that the beatings had increased toward the end of their imprisonment. They said that the North Koreans had apparently been provoked by a photograph taken of the crewmen after their capture showing their fingers in an obscene gesture. Law said the beatings continued on and off during the entire period of captivity, but the worst beating was inflicted upon him less than two weeks before his release.

A Navy spokesman said that both men had been directed not to answer questions about the capture of the surveillance ship off North Korea last 23 January or about other details concerning their captivity.
