Background: There was uproar in the New South Wales Parliament too, when a joint sitting began to elect a successor to Mr. Justice Murphy in the Senate.

The shouting began when Opposition members attempted to move a series of points of order, claiming that the joint sitting was unconstitutional; and from then on according to he ABC's state political reporter, the joint sitting became a slanging match.

At one stage a policeman moved towards the Bar of the House after a Labour member, Mr. Jack P???nshaw, refused to a call to leave the Chamber. The policeman left after the government Whip, Mr. Tim Walker, spoke to him.

Finally, the Government applied the gag to bring on a vote, and Alderman Bunton was elected to fill the Senate vacancy.
