MAKARIOS: "The national leader of the Arab world expressed his interest for what is happening today in the island - the future of which, due to its strategic position, is closely linked with the future and development of this sensitive area of the Middle East. The independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus greatly concerns the Arab world, already engaged in a valiant struggle for regaining its occupied territories. President Sadat reaffirmed, once again, his country's support for the independence, sovereignity and territorial integrity of Cyprus and for riddance of all foreign troops. I am fully satisfied with my talks with President Sadat and deeply appreciate his goodwill and his attitude on the Cyprus problem".

The Cypriot archbishop, who arrived in Egypt from a visit to neighbouring Algeria, also declared that Greek Cypriots would resist Turkish occupation and would' fight to regain their land'.

Archbishop Makarios was deposed in a coup by the Greek-led Cyprus National Guard on July 15, and has since spent most of his time in exile in England.
