Background: United States Defence Secretary Caspar Weinberger arrived in Israel on the day (September 2) that the Israel Cabinet rejected President Reagan's latest proposals for settlement of the Palestinian question. Mr. Weinberger flew in from the Lebanese capital,Beirut, where he had been witnessing the final day of the Palestinian guerrillas' pull-out. He mer Israeli Defence Minister Ariel Sharon on the morning of September 2 and was taken for a tour of a munitions factory in Tel Aviv. The US Defence Secretary was shown the cream of Israel's military aircraft, including these Kaffir planes, as well as missiles and military vehicles. Also present was General Eitan, in the red beret, the Israeli Chief of Staff. Mr. Weinberger, who discussed Israeli security issues but not the new US plan, was also due to visit the Golan Heights, captured from Syria in 1967, and to fly over the Occupied West Bank.
