Background: UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjoeld - during his brief visit to Brussels July 27 - met Belgian Premier Gaston Eyskens and afterwards was present at a Cabinet meeting. Hammarskjoeld arrived accompanied by Foreign Minister Wigny.
Hammarskjoeld's talks with the Belgian Government were expected to include discussion of a Belgian plan for delaying the sending of UN troops into the Congo Province of Katanga.
Belgium is reported to be anxious to retain close ties with Katanga, the wealthy copper mining province which Premier Tshombe is trying to make independent of the Congo. There was talk in Brussels of a plan for sending into Katanga a token force of UN troops.
Later July 27 Hammarskjoeld met King Baudouin and was then to continue his journey to the congo.
