Background: Visnews filmed Jan 25 the 200-year old game of Eisschiess - the Bavarian version of curling - at Zwiesel in the Bavarian Forest near Czechoslovakia's South West border.

Zwiesel is said to be the birthplace of the game. Competitors well wrapped in the heavy snow fall came from many parts of Germany for the contest.

With steady hands, trained eyes, they wielded the heavy eisstock across the ice to the daube - a target at the end of the pitch. To keep the sliding surface of the eisstock polished, they rubbed on it hydrochloric acid.

There were nine women's teams, 13 men's teams; each of four persons. The eisstock is half the weight of the stone used in curling and the 100-meters course in this contest is never swept.
