  • Description

THE POPE PROMULGATED FIVE DOCUMENTS AIMED AT MODERNISING THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH DURING A CEREMONY IN ST. PETER'S TODAY (THURSDAY). THE DOCUMENTS HAD ALL BEEN OVER-WHELMINGLY APPROVED BY THE VATICAN COUNCIL. MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND BISHOPS ASSEMBLED IN THE BASILICA TO CAST THEIR FORMAL VOTE ON THE MEASURES.

THE FIVE MEASURES ON WHICH THE COUNCIL FATHERS VOTED DEALT WITH CHURCH ADMINISTRATION; THE WORK OF MONKS AND NUNS; THE TRAINING OF STUDENT PRIESTS; CATHOLIC EDUCATION; AND, THE CHURCH'S RELATIONS WITH JEWISH AND OTHER NON-CHRISTIAN RELIGIONS.

AS ROW AFTER ROW OF COUNCIL FATHERS CAST THEIR VOTES, THE SLIPS WERE FED INTO ELECTRONIC COMPUTERS. AND WHILE THE RESULTS WERE BEING ASSESSED, POPE PAUL SPOKE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NEW MEASURES -- FOR PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD AND FOR THE FUTURE.

SYNOPSIS: THE POPE'S PROMULGATIONS - ESPECIALLY THAT DEALING WITH RELATIONSHIPS TO NON-CHRISTIANS AND ATHEISTS - ARE DESCRIBED AS 'NEW CHAPTERS IN THE ANCIENT HISTORY OF ROMAN CATHOLISM.' THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL WAS CALLED BY THE LATE POPE JOHN IN 1962.

THIS FINAL SESSION OF THE COUNCIL HAS BEEN DISCUSSING SOME OF THE MOST "PROGRESSIVE" IDEAS YET PRESENTED. THE DOCUMENT ON RELATIONS TO NON-CHRISTIANS SETS OUT A NEW APPROACH BY THE CHURCH RELATING TO THE REASONS FOR THE ACCEPTANCE OF ATHEISM.
