  • Description

Israeli Defence Minister Shimon Peres has promised firearms to the people of the Galilean Hills village of Rihanyia, following a Palestinian guerrilla raid there late on Saturday night (30 November).

He made the promise on Sunday (1 December) at the funeral of a farmer killed in the raid.

He said he would immediately provide a gun for every man who could shoot and, in addition, would give the village better security protection.

The guerrillas, armed with automatic rifles and grenades, tried to seize a house and grab hostages. They later surrendered to Israeli troops. They carried leaflets demanding the release of five Arab prisoners held in Israel.

The village, which has no proper defence, is populated by about 700 Circassians - who are neither Jews or Arabs. They came from the Caucasus Mountains in the Soviet Union and settled in israel more than 100 years ago as mercaneries working for the Ottoman Empire.

The village is about five kilometres (three miles) south of the Lebanese border.
