SITHOLE: "The agreement, in spite of some difficulties that we have had, is irreversible. It is the first type of an agreement that has been reached between blacks and whites in this country for the last 88 years. For the first time blacks and whites have something in common, something to defend together. And that something in common is majority rule on the basis of one man one vote. It is independence on the 31st of December this year. The only reason for the armed struggle in the past has been the need for majority rule in this country. That principle has now ben conceded. The Political battle is over."

REPORTER: "Do you think there is going to be a blood bath here as has been predicted?"

SITHOLE: "No, I do not think so. I think the evacuation plans drawn by the British Government are merely intended to undermine the confidence of thy whites in this country so that there would be more chaos, there should be more need for the British to intervene immediately. As far as we are concerned the white people have a place in this country not only as the blacks who have the technical know-how, but as ordinary people who should have their homes here."
