  • Description

THE SPECIAL BRITISH ENVOY SENT FROM LONDON TO ASSESS THE CHANCES OF SETTLING THE RHODESIAN INDEPENDENCE DEADLOCK, LORD ALPORT, TODAY (THURSDAY) CONTINUED HIS ROUND OF TALKS IN SALISBURY WITH LEADERS OF THE IAN SMITH REGIME. ON TUESDAY, HE MET MR. IAN SMITH HIMSELF.

LORD ALPORT ARRIVED IN SALISBURY A WEEK AGO TODAY, AND HIS MEETING WITH MR. SMITH ON TUESDAY WAS HIS FIRST. THEIR TALKS AT MR SMITH'S OFFICE IN THE CENTRE OF SALISBURY LASTED 37 MINUTES. SOURCES CLOSE TO MR SMITH DISCOUNTED SUGGESTIONS OF GLOOM AND TENSION AT THE MEETING, SAYING THAT A "VERY HAPPY ATMOSPHERE" PREVAILED.

AFTER THE MEETING, LORD ALPORT LEFT BY CAR WITHOUT SPEAKING TO NEWSMEN WAITING OUTSIDE. HE SMILED BUT SHOOK HIS HEAD WHEN ASKED IF HE HAD ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT THE TALKS. A SPOKESMAN FOR LORD ALPORT SAID LATER THAT THE ENVOY DID NOT WISH TO COMMENT AT PRESENT HOW HIS TALKS WERE PROCEEDING.
