  • Description

Jubilant Calcutta crowds celebrated the end of the Indo-Pakistan war on Friday (December 17) by burning effigies of President Nixon and President Yahya Khan -- who has since handed over power to left wing leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Earlier they gave a hero's reception to Lieutenant-General Jagjit Aurora, commander of India's military forces on the eastern front, back in Calcutta after leading his army into defeated Dacca. This film was shot by a VISNEWS crew, one of several stationed in India and Pakistan during the two-week war.

SYNOPSIS: India, Friday... and jubilant Calcutta crowds hall the end of the war with Pakistan following the fall of Dacca, principal city of East Pakistan. Hero of the day, cheered by crowds on his return from Dacca after its defeat. was Lieutenant-General Jagjit Aurora -- commander of Indian forces on the ???tern front. The day before, he was in Dacca to accept the surrender of the Pakistan Government forces there, and led a victorious military drive into the defeated city. Later, he promised that Indian troops would withdraw "within a matter of weeks".

Elsewhere in Calcutta, demonstrators marched on the offices of the United States Information Services, where they burned effigies of President Nixon and President Yahya Khan -- who has since handed over power in Pakistan to left-wing leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. Police were on hand to control the crowds as they demonstrated their anger at the United States' support for Pakistan during the war, but no serious incidents were reported.

India, meanwhile, has recognised the government of Bangladesh in East Pakistan, and has promised maximum financial assistance for the rehabilitation of the war-scarred nation. But while the war itself has ended, recriminations continue.
