  • Description

QUEEN ELIZABETH AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH ENDED THEIR FIVE-DAY STATE VISIT TO BELGIUM TODAY (FRIDAY) WITH A TOUR OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR BATTLEFIELDS OF YPRES.

THE FIELDS AROUND THE HISTORIC BELGIAN TOWN WERE THE SCENE OF ALMOST CONTINUOUS MILITARY OPERATIONS FROM 1914 ONWARDS. MORE THAN A QUARTER OF A MILLION BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH TROOPS DIED IN THE FIERCE AND TRAGIC FIGHTING.

QUEEN ELIZABETH AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH LAID A WREATH AT THE WAR CEMETERY NEAR PASSCHENDAELE, SITE OF THE LAST STAGE OF THE BATTLE OF YPRES IN 1971. THE CEMETERY HAS 12,000 GRAVES OF BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH SOLDIERS.

ACCOMPANIED BY KING BAUDOUIN AND QUEEN FABIOLA THE BRITISH ROYAL COUPLE ALSO VISITED THE CANADIAN FORCES MEMORIAL, AND THE MENIN GATE MEMORIAL, WHICH COMMEMORATES THE 100,000 SOLDIERS OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE WHO DIED ON THE YPRES SALIENT, BUT HAVE NO KNOWN GRAVE. IN A POIGNANT CEREMONY THE "LAST POST" WAS SOUNDED, AS IT HAS BEEN EVER SINCE THE GATES WERE ERECTED IN 1928.

THIS EVENING THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH LEFT OSTEND BY AIR FOR LONDON AIRPORT. THE QUEEN'S VISIT TO BELGIUM WAS THE FIRST BY A BRITISH SOVEREIGN FOR 44 YEARS.

EARLIER IN THE DAY THE ROYAL COUPLE HAD VISITED THE MEDIAEVAL CITY OF BRUGES WHERE THEY MET CIVIC OFFICIALS. THE QUEEN WAS PRESENTED WITH A TABLECLOTH OF BRUGES LACE, WHILE THE DUKE RECEIVED A MODEL FISHING BOAT.
