  • Description

In Jordan, a massive explosion in a dynamite store near the capital, Amman, or Sunday night (11 March) killed fourteen people and injured at least forty others. The explosion flattened the three-storey depot and gutted five housed nearby.

SYNOPSIS: All that was left of the dynamite store at Un Al-Basatin was a huge crater. The blast of the explosion was felt fifteen kilometres (9 miles) away in Amman, where many windows were shattered.

Six people were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Thirty-four others were treated later discharged. The initial estimate of those killed was fourteen, but police, who are still investigating the blast, believe there could be more bodies buried under the rubble.

The cause was not known, but police have ruled out sabotage. The building was packed with dynamite and chemicals. The impact of the blast was so great that five houses were torn apart beyond repair.

Reuter's news agency said Jordan's King Hussein, Prime Minister Modar Badran and Interior Minister Suleiman Arar rushed to the scene to supervise rescue operations.
