  • Description

A Car Radiophone service, enabling telephone calls to be made by - and to - people travelling in cars was demonstrated October 22 in Manchester.

The new service is to be opened by the Postmaster General, October 28, and Manchester will serve as a test area for the rest of Great Britain.

A radio station forms the vital link between the subscriber in his car and the telephone exchange. On the Manchester switchboard, a girl operator stands by to deal with radiophone calls. Cars equipped for the new service carry in the luggage boot a radio receiver and transmitter.

The Radiophone licence fee is GBP7.10.0. per quarter year, and calls cost 2/6d. for 3 minutes. There has already been a good response to the new scheme and charges are to be reduced as it becomes more popular.
