Background: Britain's Defence Secretary, Lord Carrington arrived in Malta on Thursday (August 19) for talks with Malta's Prime Minister, Mr. Dom Mintoff, on the continued British use of Malta's Naval bases. Lord Carrington, leading a 12-strong delegation from Britain's Defence, Foreign and Treasury Ministries, arrived only twelve hours after NATO sailors had hauled down their flags from NATO's Mediterranean headquarters on the island.
The two parties were scheduled to hold their first meeting on friday to explore a base for negotiations on a British offer that would respond to Malta's demands for a much higher rent for military facilities on the island.
SYNOPSIS: Britain's Defence Secretary, Lord Carrington arrived in Malta on Thursday night for talks with the Maltese Government over the continued British use of military facilities on the island.
The British Minister is heading a 12-member delegation from the Defence, Foreign and Treasury Ministries. He was greeted by Dr. Joseph Caesar, Minister for Labour, Employment and Welfare and the British High Commissioner, Sir Dun??? Watson. The talks were to begin on Friday and will centre on negotiations on the price Britain must pay for future use of the military facilities on Malta Britain has offered eight and a half million pounds a year. The maltese Government has asked for three times the amount.
