  • Description

Two hundred and twenty members of the Shanghai Ballet flew home from Tokyo on Wednesday (16 August) at the end of a month-long tour of Japan.

The tour itself came at a time when relations between Japan and The People's Republic of China have been undergoing a marked improvement, and the ballet troupe's departure for Shanghai in two Japanese airliners signalled the first Japanese commercial flights to China since the Second World War.

It's reported in Tokyo that the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Kakuei Tanaka, has been in contact with Chinese officials about introducing regular air services between Japan and China.

While the Shanghai Ballet was in Japan, its head Mr. Sun Ping-Hua, met senior Japanese ministers and officials. He was told a week ago that Mr. Tanaka would like to visit Peking to discuss the normalisation of relations. Only twenty-four hours later an announcement came from Peking that Premier Chou would welcome such a visit.
