    FRIEDRICHS, A 26-YEAR-OLD ARMY OFFICER, WON BOTH HEATS ONA CZ MACHINE AND NOW HAS 42 POINTS IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES. JEFF SMITH OF BRITAIN, RIDING A BSA, WHO FINISHED SECOND AND FIFTH IN THE TWO HEATS, WAS SECOND AND TOLF TIBBLIN OF SWEDEN RIDING A CZ CAME THIRD AFTER FINISHING THIRD AND FOURTH IN THE HEATS.

    THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS POINTS AFTER YESTERDAY'S RACING ARE;
    1. FRIEDRICHS 42 POINTS.

    2. TIBBLIN 27 POINTS.

    3. SMITH 23 POINTS.

    SYNOPSIS RIDERS LINE UP FOR THE START OF THE EAST GERMAN 500 CC MOTO-CROSS GRAND PRIX WHICH WAS HELD AT GUMPELSTADT YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). A THUNDERSTORM HAD MADE THE TRACK VERY DIFFICULT AND RACE OFFICIALS DECIDED TO SHORTEN THE COURSE AND HOLD THE RACE OVER ONLY EIGHT LAPS INSTEAD OF THE NORMAL TWELVE.

    TAKING AND HOLDING THE LEAD TO THE FINISH IS PAUL FRIEDRICHS, THE EAST GERMAN RIDER. FRIEDRICHS WON BOTH HEATS OF THE MOTO-CROSS AND THEREBY INCREASED HIS LEAD IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - HE NOW HAS FORTY-TWO POINTS TO HIS CREDIT.
