    ONE OF THE LARGEST EXHIBITIONS OF THE WORK OF THE FRENCH PAINTER MARC CHAGALL HAS OPENED AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WESTERN ART IN TOKYO, JAPAN.

    THE EXHIBITION CONSISTS OF ABOUT 350 WORKS BROUGHT FROM 15 COUNTRIES.VIRTUALLY ALL THE ARTIST'S FINEST WORKS HAVE BEEN LENT FOR THE SHOW BY 22 MUSEUMS, 81 COLLECTORS, AND ONE CHURCH -- THE CATHEDRAL OF METZ IN FRANCE, WHICH HAS SENT TWO STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS.SEVENTY-ONE WORKS HAVE BEEN SENT FROM THE UNITED STATES AND FIFTY-FOUR FROM FRANCE.EIGHT PAINTINGS HAVE BEEN SENT FROM THE SOVIET UNION.

    FEW OF THIS MODERN PAINTER'S WORKS HAVE BEEN SEEN AS ORIGINALS IN JAPAN BEFORE.HE ENJOYS A HIGH REPUTATION IN THAT COUNTRY WHERE HIS USE OF COLOUR AND POETIC IMAGINATION ARE GREATLY ADMIRED.

    AT THE OPENING CEREMONY PRINCE TAKAMATSU, YOUNGER BROTHER OF THE EMPEROR CUT A TAPE TO MARK THE START OF THE EXHIBITION.AMONG THE GUESTS WERE MADAME BROWN, CHAGALL'S SISTER, M.ETTENNE DENNERY, THE FRENCH AMBASSADOR AND M.JACQUES JAUJARD, SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE FRENCH MINISTRY OF CULTURE.
