    A MAN TRIED TO SWIM FROM AFRICA TO EUROPE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). BUT 42-YEAR-OLD IRISHMAN JACK McCLELLAND WAS BEATEN BY STRONG TIDES AND FOG, WHICH PUT HIM OFF COURSE. HIS ATTEMPT TO BRIDGE THE TWO CONTINENTS WAS ACROSS THE STRAITS OF GIBRALTAR, BETWEEN MOROCCO AND THE BRITISH COLONY.

    McCLELLAND, WHO RUNS A HEALTH FOOD SHOP IN BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND, TRAINS ON A RIGID VEGETARIAN DIET, AND IS A VETERAN OF MANY LONG-DISTANCE SWIMS. HE HOPED TO BECOME THE FIRST MAN TO SWIM THE STRAITS, IN SPITE OF THE THREAT OF SHARKS.

    BUT AFTER SWIMMING 15 MILES (24 KMS) IN SIX-AND-THREE-QUARTER HOURS, HE HAD TO ABANDON THE ATTEMPT. HE LOST HIS BEARINGS IN FOG, WHICH TOOK HIM INTO STRONG CURRENTS. HE SAYS HE WILL MAKE ANOTHER ATTEMPT SOON.
