  • Description

Italian space technicians on Saturday successfully blasted into orbit an earth satellite from an Italian-Government launching platform off the Kenya coast.

The Italian-built 360-pound (164 kg) satellite, called San Marco-C, is the third in an Italian-United States joint programme. It was carried into equatorial orbit by a United States Scout rocket, and will be used to study the density and temperature of the upper atmosphere.

This film of the launch was shot by Visnews staff cameraman Mohamed Amin.

SYNOPSIS: Early on Saturday morning at a platform in Formosa bay, off the coast of Kenya, launch-time was approaching for an Italian satellite designed to study the earth's upper atmosphere.

On another platform nearby, visitors were welcomed by Italian technicians and their head, Professor Michele Sirinian of Rome University.

The satellite, third in a joint Italian-United States programme, will collect data on atmospheric drag, density and temperature. The launch was successful, and the rocket's now orbiting the equator.

The 360-pound/164 kg. instrument package was launched on top of a United States four-stage Scout rocket. The first satellite in the series was launched from the San Marco platform nearly four years ago. The second, the U.S. Explorer 42, followed in December, and American officials said earlier this month it had discovered a new pulsating star.

This satellite will be tracked by an Italian station at the San Marco base camp, and by a United States station near Quito, Ecuador. Another will be launched in July, and a fifth next December or January.
