Background: Strong continents of Dominican police patrolled Santa Domingo to control crowds of mourners at the funeral of a communist guerrilla on Thursday (13 Jan.). He was one of four men shot during a 15-hour gun battle with troops and police earlier in the week.
All four men were buried at separate funerals on Thursday. And at the same time, President Joaquin Balaguer was at the funeral of eight policemen who died in the gun battle, which tied up a force of 2,500 men and two tanks. The gang was wanted in connection with a raid on a Santa Domingo bank last November.
SYNOPSIS: Strong patrols of Dominican troops and police guarded the streets of Santa Domingo on Thursday--two days after a major gun battle between security forces and a communist group. Eight policemen, killed during the battle, were to be buried with President Joaquin Balaguer at the graveside. But the security operation was designed to prevent trouble at the funeral of four communist guerrillas who died in the battle. All four were given separate funerals--and this was the scene at one of them.
The four men shot in the gun battle had all been wanted in connection with a bank robbery last November. They were run to ground by security forces in a wooded area on the eastern side of the city. A group of about eight escaped to a cava in the woods and then started the fifteen hours gun-battle. A force of twenty-five hundred troops and police, backed by a couple of tanks, was sent against the gunmen.
This funeral passed off peacefully. But at others, shots were fired and scuffling broke out. Meantime an intensive search for other gang members continued.
