  • Description

Greece may well find it a little embarrassing to anticipate the existence of internment camps in other countries when she herself, since 1946, has maintained a large internment camp for Communists and others left-wing in their politics.

The camp, for both men and women, is situated on a remote and rocky island in the south-eastern Aegean, better known as Ayios Efstratice Island.

Following the recent Government resignations and the Formation of a caretaker Government, the new Minister of the Public Security, Mr. Manidakis, ordered the release from the camp of some 142 men and 3 women - after, of course, a thorough examination of their history and record.

Right-wing circles have reacted strongly to Mr. Manidakis's action, insisting that the release of communistic elements at such short notice before a general election is making for trouble and dangerous for the country.

However, the release of the communists must be accepted as on a most of the caretaker Government's goodwill and determination to make the forthcoming elections really free elections.

Thus it is anticipated that more internments will regain their freedom before the day when the election take place.
