    ATHLETES FROM THE SOVIET UNION TOOK THE FIRST THREE PLACES YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) IN THE MEN'S INTERNATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY RACE FOR DEAF AND DUMB HELD AT PAVIA, NEAR MILAN, IN ITALY. TAKING PART IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS, THE 8TH TO BE HELD, WERE ATHLETES FROM 25 NATIONS.

    THE ATHLETIC MEETING AT PAVIA COVERED THREE DAYS, WITH CROSS COUNTRY RACES FOR JUNIOR, WOMEN AND MEN. THE RACES WERE SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE IN ANY WEATHER AND ON BEATEN EARTH TRACKS NEAR THE RIVER TICINO. EACH COUNTRY WAS ASKED TO ENTER NOT MORE THAN FIVE ATHLETES FOR EACH EVENT.

    THE MEN'S EVENT WAS OVER 6,000 METRES (6,562 FEET) AND INCLUDED 62 DEAF AND DUMB ATHLETES, REPRESENTING BELGIUM, CANADA, BRITAIN, INDIA, BULGARIA, ITALY, AUSTRIA, FRANCE, BRAZIL, GERMANY, POLAND, ISRAEL, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, FINLAND, THE ARGENTINE, ROMANIA, THE U.S.S.R., SWEDEN, MEXICO, SWITZERLAND, PERSIA, GREECE AND NORWAY.

    THE RACE WAS WON BY ALEXANDRE BOITSOV OF THE U.S.S.R., FOLLOWED BY A TEAM-MATE, ALEXANDER KRIVOV, IN SECOND PLACE. ANOTHER SOVIET ATHLETE (NAME NOT AVAILABLE) WAS THIRD. TO THE FIRST THREE PLACE WINNERS WENT GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE MEDALS. THE TEAMS WERE ALSO RACING FOR THE ITALIAN PRESIDENT'S CUP, FORMERLY HELD BY POLAND. IN ADDITION, EACH RUNNER WHO TOOK PART IN THE RACES WAS GIVEN A SOUVENIR MEDAL.
