  • Description

IT WAS A BATTLE OF THE ANZACS AT THE WEST HAM SPEEDWAY STADIUM, LONDON, TODAY (TUESDAY) WHEN REIGNING CHAMPION BARRY BRIGGS, OF NEW ZEALAND, MET CHALLENGER CHARLIE MONK, OF AUSTRALIA, IN THE GOLDEN HELMET BRITISH MATCH-RACE CHAMPIONSHIP.

BRIGGS WON THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE LAST SEPTEMBER FOR THE THIRD TIME. HE WAS PREVIOUSLY WORLD CHAMPION IN 1957 AND '58. ALTHOUGH DOGGED WITH ENGINE TROUBLE THIS YEAR, HE BEAT MONK AT SHEFFIELD LAST WEEK IN THE SECOND ROUND OF THE THREE-ROUND GOLDEN HELMET TROPHY. MONK, A FORMER PUPIL OF BRIGGS, HAD ALREADY WON THE FIRST ROUND.

SO TONIGHT'S DUEL BEGAN WITH BOTH CONTESTANTS WITH ONE WIN, AND THIS WAS THE DECIDING ROUND. THE SPEEDWAY ACES ARE WELL KNOWN AT WEST HAM'S CUSTOM HOUSE TRACK WHERE MONK, WHO HAS BECOME ONE OF THE MOST DARING RIDERS IN BRITAIN SINCE HE ARRIVED FOUR YEARS AGO, BEAT TOP CLASS RIVALS TO WIN THE EASTER TROPHY.

BUT IN SPITE OF MONK'S RECORD ON THE TRACK EARLIER THIS YEAR, IT WAS THE EXPERIENCE OF BRIGGS THAT COUNTED IN THE END. SO FOR YET ANOTHER YEAR BRIGGS ADDED THE GOLDEN HELMET TO HIS SPEEDWAY TROPHIES.
