    SLOGANS DISPLAYED INCLUDED "PEACE AND UNITY", "DOWN WITH VIOLENCE, MUTINY AND TREASON" AND "LONG LIVE MRS. NYERERE". IT WAS A CAREFREE MARCH IN WHICH DANCES WERE CONDUCTED AND SONGS CHORUSED BY BOTH MARCHERS AND ONLOOKERS.

    THE DEMONSTRATION OF LOYALTY BEGAN OUTSIDE THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE TANGANYIKA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION, THE RULING PARTY, AND ENDED AT STATE HOUSE, RESIDENCE OF THE PRESIDENT.

    (THE MARCH WAS AN OFFSHOT TO LAST MONTH'S MUTINY BY PRIVATES OF THE TANGANYIKA RIFLES' FIRST BATTALION, WHO TOOK OVER DAR-ES-SALAAM FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THE SOLDIERS INVOLVED HAVE SINCE BEEN DISCHARGED. MEANWHILE, 17 COUNTRIES HAVE ANSWERED PRESIDENT NYERERE'S CALL FOR A MINISTERIAL MEETING OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY TO DISCUSS RECENT DISTURBANCES IN EAST AFRICA).
