  • Description

Vice President Hubert Humphrey went ahead with plans for a trip west on Saturday (23 January), saying he had been told that President Johnson's illness presented no cause for alarm. Before flying to his home state, Minnesota, Humphrey talked to reporters outside his suburban Washington home.

Humphrey flew to St. Paul, Minnesota, to serve as grand marshall in a winter carnival parade. Mrs. Humphrey accompanied him on the trip. When reporters asked bout their health, both said they felt fine. But Humphrey laughed and held up a small bottle, saying "I'm carrying my cough medicine."
