CARTER:"We understand that the extraordinary tragic event, that Ambassador Adolph Dubs was killed after being seized by two terrorists of some king of designation on his way to work from his home to the embassy at about eight forty-five this morning Kabul time. He was taken to the Hotel Kabul in downtown Kabul where he was held. The Government forces in Afghanistan decided to rush that room and to retake him. In the ensuing fight he was killed. I also want to add that we did urge the Government in Afghanistan not to take precipitate action, to attempt to talk first. We urged that in the strongest terms. That was not heeded."

Background: The Carter administration, expressing outrage over the killing of its kidnapped envoy to Afghanistan, has sent a strongly-worded protest to Moscow over the role it alleges Soviet advisors played in the abortive attempt to free him. Ambassador Adolph "Spike" Dubs, aged 58, was found shot dead after a fire-fight between police and Moslem gunmen who seized him as he was being driven to work on Wednesday (14 February 1979) in Kabul.

SYNOPSIS: Dubs becomes the seventh United States' ambassador to be killed overseas in the last ten years. Here in Nicosia in 1974 during anti-American riots in Cyprus, Ambassador Rodger Davies was shot dead.

The Cypriot police tried in vain to control the crowds attacking the embassy but vehicles were set on fire and overturned and the representative of the American government died. The ambassador and his secretary were killed by Greek Cypriots urging that the United States do more to stop Turkish advances on the island.

Three years ago in Beirut (1976) ambassador Francis Meloy and Economic Counsellor Robert Waring were machine-gunned in an ambush at the crossing-point between the Christian and Moslem sections of the city. Their bodies were taken from the embassy in a hearse to Damascus to be flown back to the United States. "Spike" Dubs died when troops stormed his captors and State Department spokesman Hodding Carter explained how the Afghani government and the Americans disagreed over the action that should be taken to free him.
