Background: THE BATTLE FOR ST. HILARION CASTLE CONTINUED THIS MORNING (SUNDAY) WITH GREEK-CYPRIOT TROOPS FIRING MORTAR BOMBS AT TURKISH POSTIONS DOMINATING THE VITAL ROAD BETWEEN NICOSIA AND THE COASTAL PORT OF KYRENIA. FIRING HAS ALSO BROKEN OUT AGAIN IN THE SOUTH OF THE ISLAND AT THE VILLAGE OF AYIOS THEODOROS -- IN SPITE OF A CEASEFIRE NEGOTIATED BY UNITED NATIONS FORCES YESTERDAY.

YESTERDAY'S ASSAULT ON THE TURKISH-HELD CRUSADER CASTLE BEGAN AT DAWN. UNOFFICIAL ESTIMATES PUT TURKISH CASUALTIES AT 15 DEAD AND 30 CAPTURED, WHILE GREEK-CYPRIOTS REPORT THAT ONE OF THEIR MEN WAS KILLED AND ANOTHER WOUNDED.

THE ATTACK TOOK THE GREEK-CYPRIOTS TO WITHIN 3,000 YARDS (2,700 METRES) OF THE CASTLE, AND 2,000 YARDS (1,820 METRES) OF AN AIRSTRIP WHICH TURKS HAVE BUILT NEAR THE VILLAGE OF KRINI. THE GREEKS NOW OVERLOOK THE AIRSTRIP WITH THEIR MORTARS.

FILM TAKEN DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE OPERATION SHOWS GREEK-CYPRIOT NATIONAL GUARDS MOVING INTO POSITION ON THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN SLOPES, SOME OF THEM ARMED WITH MORTARS; ONE OF THE TURKISH-CYPRIOT DAD; THE GREEK-CYPRIOT WHO WAS KILLED BEING TAKEN AWAY IN A LANDROVER; REFUGEES FREED FROM A TINY GREEK CHURCH CAPTURED DURING THE ADVANCE; GROUPS OF GREEK-CYPRIOTS RETURNING FROM THE OPERATION; AND VIEWS OF ST. HILARION CASTLE AND THE AIRSTRIP TAKEN FROM THE NEW GREEK-CYPRIOT POSITIONS.

(ST. HILARION CASTLE HAS BEEN A FORMIDABLE TURKISH STRONGHOLD SINCE THE TROUBLES BEGAN. IT WAS FIRST KNOWN HISTORICALLY WHEN THE ENGLISH KING, RICHARD COEUR DE LION LAID SIEGE TO IT ON HIS WAY TO THE CRUSADES. MORE RECENTLY IT PROVIDED A FAIRYTALE BACKGROUND TO THE FILMING OF DISNEY'S 'SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS'.)
