THE FUNERAL OF 50 MINERS TOOK PLACE AT CARLTONVILLE IN SOUTH AFRICA YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). THE MINERS HAD BEEN KILLED IN AN ACCIDENT AT A GOLD MINE. IT WAS THE FIRST OF THREE MINING ACCIDENTS THAT WERE TO TAKE PLACE THIS WEEK.

THE AFRICAN MINEWORKERS WERE SUFFOCATED OR CRUSHED TO DEATH WHEN MEN AT THE BACK OF A QUEUE IN A 120 FOOT (35 METRE) LONG SUBWAY SURGED FORWARD CAUSING THE MEN AT THE FRONT TO TUMBLE DOWN A STAIRWAY LEADING TO A SHAFT ENTRANCE. MORE TUMBLED DOWN ON TOP OF THEM, BURYING THEM, AND CRUSHING AND SUFFOCATING THEM UNDER A MASS OF BODIES. AS WELL AS THE 50 DEAD THERE WERE 49 INJURED.

IT WAS THE WORST MINING ACCIDENT IN SOUTH AFRICA SINCE THE COALBROOK COAL MINE DISASTER OF 1960 WHEN 435 MINERS DIED AFTER BEING ENTOMBED BY HEAVY FALLS OF ROCK.

ON THE SAME DAY AS THE CARLTONVILLE MINE DISASTER, ONE MAN WAS KILLED AND 13 INJURED IN ANOTHER GOLD MINE. AND YESTERDAY SEVEN MINERS WERE KILLED AND SEVEN INJURED WHEN AN EXPLOSION RIPPED THROUGH ANOTHER MINE.
