  • Description

ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERING SCIENTISTS FROM THE SNOW, ICE AND PERMAFROST RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENTS AT WILMETTE, ILLINOIS (place - source), ARE LITERALLY DIGGING FOR SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE ON THE ARCTIC POLAR ICE CAP.

USING AT AUTOMATIC COAL MINING MACHINERY, THEY HAVE CARVED OUT A 1150 (eleven-hundred-and-fifty) FOOT TUNNEL IN THE ICE CAP AS PART OF A RESEARCH PROGRAM TO OBTAIN SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION THAT WILL ENABLE MEN TO BUILD, LIVE, WORK AND FIGHT, IF NECESSARY, IN POLAR REGIONS. THIS TUNNEL, BUILT DURING THE SUMMER OF 1958, CONNECTS WITH THREE LARGE STORAGE ROOMS CARVED OUT BY THE MACHINE UNDER THE ICE.

THE SCIENTISTS MEASURE THE RATE OF CLOSURE CAUSED BY THE TREMENDOUS WEIGHT OF THE ICE ABOVE THE TUNNEL.

THE ARMY ENGINEERS HAVE FOUND THAT MACHINERY STORED IN ICE ROOMS WILL NOT RUST AND AVIATION GASOLINE IMPROVES WHEN STORED IN PITS CARVED OUT OF THE ICE IN THE TUNNEL, WHERE THE TEMPERATURES REMAIN A CONSTANT TEN TO FIFTEEN DEGREES ABOVE ZERO.
